Nigeria’s Celtic FC defender, Efe Ambrose, has said the sending-off
of Scott Brown in the Champions League on Tuesday might have been a plot
successfully hatched by Barcelona players.
Brown was shown a straight red for kicking out at Neymar after an
hour of a pulsating clash that Barca went on to win 1-0, leaving Celtic
stranded at the foot of the table.
Ambrose, in a reaction after the encounter, suggested that the Barcelona winger might have made the most of the incident.
“Neymar is a star. But nobody knows – maybe it was in his mind to get one of our players sent off,” dailyrecord.co.uk
quoted the Nigerian as saying. “That is football and there is nothing
we can say that will change the decision. The referee gave the red card
and it helped them because it upset our game plan.
“Playing them 11 vs. 11 is difficult and with a man down it is even
more difficult. They got their chance and took it. We had a couple of
chances before they scored but we didn’t take them.
“We held them well and did fine defensively. We will learn from this
as a team. We are not individuals, we are a team. We are one unit and we
need to concentrate on Motherwell next and then Ajax.”
The 24-year-old said the experience against the Spanish giant will
stand them in good stead when they visit they Camp Nou in a couple of
weeks. He admitted, however, that defeating the champions in front of
their fans will be difficult.
“Barcelona scored first and relieved the pressure on them and the
red card also didn’t help us. I believe we will play better next time
and also keep our cool,” he said. “Going to the Nou Camp is going to be
harder so we will need to learn from this.
“The most important thing is to look forward to Ajax home and away. I
think we will need to take four points. That’s the minimum if we want
to go through. If Barcelona can stay unbeaten and if that happens, it
would help us."
