The Super Eagles of Nigeria might have succeeded in reaching
a fifth World Cup in Brazil, but the latest FIFA world ranking have
seen the side drop three places to 36th.
Despite seeing
off Ethiopia 2-0 to seal a 4-1 aggregate victory in the return leg of the
playoff matches played on November 16 and drawing 2-2 against Italy two days
later, Nigeria’s only 1-0 loss to Jordan in Amman have halted their progress in
the monthly FIFA ranking released on Thursday, 28 November, 2013.
However the
African champions remains the fourth best team in the Confederation of African
(CAF) Zone, behind Cote d’Ivoire (17th, unmoved), Ghana (24th, down a place)
and Algeria (26th, up 6 places).
All teams in the
top 20, excluding Ukraine (18th, up 2 places), have booked their ticket to next
summer’s World Cup and Cameroon (51st, up 8 places) are one of the three teams
outside of the top 50 to have managed to reach the Brazil World Cup; others
being Korea Republic (54th, up 2 places) and Australia (59th, down 2 places).
