Super
Eagles handler Stephen Keshi says he’s delighted to have won the Coach of the
Year Award, adding that he expects Victor Moses, who picked up the Nigerian
Footballer of the Year award to give his hundred percent to the national team
at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Both Keshi and
Moses were on Tuesday, awarded the coveted accolades at the Nigerian Sports
Award which held at the Muson Centre in Lagos.
Keshi claimed
the Coach of the Year gong ahead of Golden Eaglets coach, Manu Garba, after
leading Eagles to a third African Cup of Nations (Afcon) triumph in South
Africa in February and also qualifying the side for a fifth FIFA World Cup in
Brazil next year.
“I never thought
of being nominated let alone being named the Coach of the Year in Nigeria, the
first time I will be receiving such an award. I am overwhelmed and thankful to
those who thought me good enough to be so honoured, God will honour them,” said
Keshi.
While
congratulating on-loan Liverpool of England forward, Moses, Keshi expressed
satisfaction with the former England youth player’s commitment to national duty
but urged him to give more.
“He is a
talented youngster and has been giving his total commitment when he comes to
play for Nigeria, but I believe that he has only given us 80%, we hope he will
give 100% at the World Cup. He is still young but he can do better for the
Super Eagles,” he added.
On Mikel Obi,
who was voted Sports Person of the Year, the Super eagles coach said: “For
Mikel, I am happy that gradually the world is recognising his talent which he
has been showing anytime he plays in the national team. I salute him and I am
proud of his achievement but must also say it’s just the beginning of greater
things to come for all the players in the national team.”
