CROSS RIVER NEWS: Another lecturer flays ASUU over strike

LEGISREPORTS NG -Irked by the strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities which is over two months now, a  senior lecturer with the Cross River state University of Technology (CRUTECH), Professor Gabriel Olayi has lambasted the federal government and the union. In a statement made available to journalists in Calabar, the don said “the federal government and ASUU have been, in practice, responsible for the deteriorating situation in the university education in Nigeria, while pretending to be advocates of quality education.

“The senior lecturer said was only fighting for herself and not really for the overall interest of students.  Parts of the statement reads, “ASUU conceives, breeds and fertilizes avenues for strike action. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has set up standards which cover what ASUU claims she wants for the university.”The university community is made up of staff and students.

The system cannot achieve its objectives if the components are not working together. ASUU is only a small part of the university community and yet lords it over the majority as a heartless dictator.”Students should note that the quality of their education/degree will not improve with the indiscriminate strikes, undefined academic calendar, truncated courses and lectures, and award of unearned grades/credits by ASUU members.”Just as ASUU has the right to earned their allowances and benefits, students have the right to receive their lectures and graduates as when due. ASUU has no right to hold students hostage.

ASUU has no right to achieve her ambition at the expense of the students. If ASUU is really concerned about the system, she should sacrifice her rights for the system to move forward.
