Newly-registered Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), has formally commenced online registration of its members nationwide.
The development comes barely one month after it got its Certificate of Registration.
The party is also advocating that Nigerians in the Diaspora be allowed to vote during the 2015 general elections.
At a press conference yesterday in Abuja, National Chairman of the
PDM, Bashir Yusuf, said that the move wass in line with the party’s
commitment to openness, fairness and a drive to create a level playing
ground for all Nigerians of voting age within and outside the country to
participate in governance through authentic party membership.
According to him: “We are trying to give people options to register
online so that they don’t have to go back to their wards were they
normally go to cast their vote before they are registered.
The national chairman noted that PDM appears to be the first
political party in Nigeria to have started online registration of its
members, adding that the party would commence manual registration of
members in all the wards in the country in October.
He maintained that since Nigerians abroad had shown more interest in
the political process, it was only fair and appropriate for the
Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to encourage their
enfranchisement.
