Nollywood actress Funke Akindele, popularly known as ‘Jenifa’, has
been announced by Rotary Club as their ambassador for Polio eradication
campaign.
Funke Akindele is to lead the ‘This Close’ public awareness campaign
that will help Rotary achieve its goal of a polio-free world.
Speaking on the new position, Funke said, “I feel so honoured to be
part of a charitable cause like this. I accepted this appointment
because polio kills or paralyses children and Rotary is committed to
ending this terrible disease worldwide.”
“I also learned that the world has never been so close to eradication
of polio since the mid 80’s thanks to the vigorous efforts of Rotary
International and its partners.”
Akindele’s appointment will be announced officially to the media on October 24, 2013, as part of the activities lined up to mark the world polio day.
Other people who have been involved in the global fight against polio
include Bill Gates, Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu,
Jackie Chan and Pop star PSY.
