The Golden Eaglets continued their preparation for the FIFA U-17
World Cup holding in the UAE later in the year with an emphatic 11-0 win
over Port Harcourt bases amateur side Espanyol.
The match which was played in the main bowl of the UJ Esuene Stadium
in Calabar on Wednesday saw the Eaglets put up a dominant performance
against a team who had earlier in the year played a 2-2 draw against the
national U-20 side during their camping in Abuja.
Speaking after the match, captain of the Port Harcourt base team
Jackson Utomobong, attest to the superior techniques of the Eaglets
stating that they were outclassed by Manu Garba tutored side.
“We want to thank the Golden Eaglets technical crew for the
opportunity of playing against them and we can see that we still need to
do more to become a good team too,” said Utomobong
On his part, Golden Eaglet Chief coach Manu Garba, praised the team
for an impressive display, stating that the chemistry and understanding
within the squad is growing by the day.
“Of course, we want a near perfect team because that is the kind of team that can go all the way to win the World Cup.
“You can see there is a good chemistry in the team and we are
delighted that the players are really responding and putting into effect
all what they are being taught in training,” said Garba.
Six Eaglet players were on the score sheet with Chidiebere Nwakali;
Theophilus Solomon; Musa Yahaya; Godwin Odibo; and Adamu Abubakar all
scoring twice, while Najim Adamu got a goal as well.
Garba continues, “We are really impressed with the performance of the
boys against Espanyol and it shows that this is not a one-man team.
“Our happiness is drawn from the fact that the goals were not scored
by the usual faces like Isaac Success, Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidera
Ezeh.”
