The Lagos State Government has retired a school principal and eight
others, including the vice-principal, for allegedly participating in
examination malpractice during the 2013 May/June West African School
Certificate Examination.
The retired state civil service staff were found guilty of
influencing the performance of the students during their Mathematics
examination.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba, said
in a statement released on Tuesday, that the government acted on
results from investigations carried out by West African Examination
Council (WAEC) officials. The results, which included a tape recording,
alleged that the teachers left the examination hall while they were
supposed to be monitoring the students in order to give the students an
opportunity to cheat.
“The affected officers are Mr. S. O Amure, School Principal on GL 17;
Mr. V. A Joseph, the Vice-Principal on GL 16; Mr K.E Ogunleye, the
Mathematics teacher on GL 15; Mr. A. I Banjoko, the Examination
supervisor on GL 12; Mrs. L. D. Akinterinwa on GL 15; Mr. A. O Araba on
GL 15; Mr. V. O Towoshe on GL 14; Mr. S.I Oladipupo and Assistant
Examination Supervisor on GL 08,” Ibirogba’s statement read.
The retired staff were accused of “abandoning the hall and classrooms
where they were supposed to invigilate, thereby condoning examination
malpractices, and failure to carry out thorough supervision of
examination.”
Ibirogba went on to state that the Lagos State Government would not
tolerate any form of fraud or malpractice and hoped that the retirement
of these officials would serve as a warning to others.
